Walking Takes a Step Forward

This year we were awarded funding from the Walking Scotland Walking Network Fund to support our walking programme. This has meant that we have been able to increase the number of health walks that are taking place in North Ayrshire. We have added three walks to the Trinity Active Travel Hub programme since the start of the summer. Four new volunteers have been trained as Walking Scotland Volunteer Walk Leaders and they have also received basic first aid training.

Our new walks are taking place in Castlepark in Irvine, Dreghorn and Skelmorlie. All the walks got off to a great start with seven or eight people attending the first walk at each location….and then coming back for the second…and third! The Castlepark Pace Makers meet every Monday at the Castlepark Community Centre at 1pm. They take short walks locally with the occasional excursion a little further afield – a recent walk in Kilwinning was greatly enjoyed. Stroll With It Dreghorn currently meet once a month – on the first Monday of the month. They meet at 10.30am at Dreghorn Cross outside Dreghorn Library and explore their village. Stroll With It Skelmorlie also currently meet once a month. They meet on the third Monday of the month at 10.30 am outside Skelmorlie Library and enjoy some walks with great views.

Our walks in other parts of North Ayrshire also continue apace. Stroll With It Arran meets fortnightly on Tuesdays to explore paths and trails around different villages across Arran. Our Stroll With It Three Towns group meets every Tuesday at 12.45. Walks start at Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston libraries on a rolling programme. The Stroll With It Kilwinning walk also takes place on a Tuesday starting at 1pm at Kilwinning Library. On Wednesdays we have two walks – our Stroll With It Irvine walk meets weekly starting at 11 am, whilst the Garnock Valley Walks start at 12.30pm meeting in a different town in the Garnock Valley each week.
